OVERVIEW OF BARBADOS

Barbados an island of approximately 166 square miles is the most easterly Caribbean island, geographically located at 13 N and 59 W. Although it is a relatively small island it has a population of app. 260,000 people.

The islands' first inhabitants were the amerindians around 1623 C and during the next 300 years several tribes inhabited Barbados at varying intervals including caribs and arawaks. Barbados was given its name by the Spanish and it is so translated as the bearded ones.

The island was re-inhabited by the English on the 27th February 1627 by Henry Powell, and thus started a period of an uninterrupted English rule of 339 years. This prolonged state of continuance has contributed enormously to both the infrastructual development of the island, and its sense of security that Barbados still enjoys today.

In 1966 Barbados gained its independence from Britain under the leadership of the late Errol Walton Barrow. A new Barbados constitution was drawn up in agreement with the British Crown, and the Parliament of Barbados adopted the Westminster system of government.

Although sugar remains the islands' main agricultural product, tourism has taken over as our main foreign exchange earner, and with our beautiful beaches, friendly people, duty free shopping and awesome nightlife, glorious handicrafts and tranquility, the island is marketed worldwide.

The island has many places of interests to offer such as the beautiful caves, green scenery, luscious botanical wonders and many memorable experiences.

Come and enjoy the beautiful island Barbados, its beyond your imagination.
